ISLAMABAD: About nine civilians were killed and nearly two dozen others sustained injuries in Indian shelling in Pakistani border areas along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir and Working Boundary in Sialkot’s Charwah, Harpal, Chaprar and Sucheetgarh sectors.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said theIndian Border Security Forces (BSF) resorted to firing and shelling along the boundary.

Rangers said the attacks along the Sialkot Working Boundary have mostly harmed civilians, adding that livestock belonging to residents of the area have been killed and houses were damaged

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed his concerns over firing on Working Boundary with India and he directed the Foreign Office to take up issue of unprovoked firing and killing of innocent people in Indian firing. Prime Minister also expressed condolence over loss of six innocent lives and injuries to 47 others during the firing.

Indian envoy summoned: Indian High Commissioner TCA Raghawan was summoned at Foreign Office and strong protest was lodged with him over the working boundary violations by Indian Border Security Forces near Sialkot which resulted in the killing of civilians.

“Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry received the Indian envoy. He was conveyed Pakistan’s protest and concern over continued LOC/working boundary violations,” Foreign Office said in a statement.

Indian high commissioner was told that India has to honour ceasefire agreement of 2003 between the two countries. Instances of firing across the Indo-Pak border have occurred intermittently over the years. In the last instance of unprovoked Indian shelling in Sialkot’s Sucheetgarh and Charwah sectors on Aug 18, 60-year-old Mohammad Shareef was killed when he was hit by a mortar shell.

A team of United Nations observers visited the villages hit by Indian shelling and met the family of Shareef at Thathi Khurd village, Sucheetgarh. The UN team also met other locals affected by Indian shelling and sought details from them about the fresh BSF hostilities, which caused heavy losses of their property and livestock.

Indians also joining Daesh, admits India

NEW DELHI: As many as 10 Indian youths are currently engaged in the Islamic State (ISIS) “war” in Syria/Iraq, according to an assessment shared by India with Australia at a meeting of their joint working group on counter-terrorism here on Thursday.

The figure of 10 Indians now with ISIS is higher than the assessment put forth at a meeting of chief secretaries and police chiefs of 12 states convened by the Union home ministry here earlier this month. At this meeting, called to discuss the ISIS’ appeal among a section of Indian youth and ways to counter it, the participants were told that 13 Indians had joined ISIS so far. Of this, seven were believed to be located in ISIS territory, while six had been killed.

According to TOI, incidentally, unlike India where ISIS has had limited success in drawing the young into its ranks, Australia has witnessed a notable outflow of its youth to jihadi theatres controlled by the outfit. As many as 150 young Australians have travelled to Iraq/Syria to fight alongside the ISIS. Of these, around 30 have come back while 60 are believed to be fighting for ISIS. Australia also perceives a threat to its citizens travelling to countries like Indonesia, where ISIS had picked up many recruits, as tourists.

Australia, during the session on counter-terrorism at the joint working group meeting on Thursday, shared with India its efforts to counter ISIS influence among its youth. This includes prevention by counseling young Muslims against getting drawn into jihadi ideology; discouraging travel of citizens to jihadi theatres by means such as seizing of passports; strengthening legal processes; taking stern action against radicalized elements who indulge in terror acts; and tracking the youth who have returned from ISIS territory, besides making a conscious effort to integrate them into the mainstream.

India, on its part, has also devised a counter-radicalization strategy to fight the ISIS’ growing appeal among a section of young Muslims. This involves counseling the vulnerable youth and their families, and countering ISIS’ advocacy of violent extremism by propagating “moderate” interpretations of Islam.

In 10 years Pakistan will have 3rd largest nuke stockpile in world

Nuke piles

NEW DELHI: In less than 10 years, Pakistan will have the third largest nuclear stockpile in the world, behind only the US and Russia, two prominent US think tanks said in a report.

According to the report, Pakistan is adding 20 warheads to its nuclear arsenal annually because of its fear of India which is also a nuclear power.

”In the coming years, the report states, Pakistan’s advantage could grow dramatically because it has a large stockpile of highly enriched uranium that could be used to quickly produce low-yield nuclear devices,” said The Washington Post on the report by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the Stimson Center.

Chaghai testsWhile India has large stockpiles of plutonium, essential for high-yield weapons, the report says that most of it is being used to produce domestic nuclear energy. It says Pakistan could have 350 warheads in the next 5-10 years, leaving UK and France behind, Times of India reported on Friday (Aug 28, 2015).

Unlike India, Pakistan hasn’t declared any no-first-use commitment and its leaders never shy away from reminding India that it is a nuclear power. Even after the recent cancellation of NSA level talks, Pakistan NSA Sartaj Aziz said nuclear power Pakistan knew how to defend itself.

“The growth path of Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal, enabled by existing infrastructure, goes well beyond the assurances of credible minimal deterrence provided by Pakistani officials and analysts after testing nuclear devices,” the report states.

Pakistan is estimated to already have 120 warheads as against India’s 100. Pakistani military officials were not available to comment on the report when it was made available to journalists in the US on Wednesday. Pakistan recently built its fourth reactor at Khushab military facility, a plutonium producing unit. Many believe that Pakistan is manufacturing low-yield, tactical nuclear weapons which, according to Indian experts, are meant to be used along the border in case of any skirmish with the Indian Army. Pakistan is developing non-strategic or tactical nuclear weapons to check the asymmetry with India in conventional capabilities, noted nuclear expert Hans M Kristensen said.
